Mirror Reflections: Seeing Yourself Through God's Eyes

One of the very first things God taught me on my healing journey was how to love myself—gulp. Sounds simple, right? Well, let me tell you, learning to love myself was about as easy as assembling IKEA furniture with missing instructions. But God patiently showed me how to embrace being His precious child, even when I felt like anything but precious.
I had to learn that I wasn’t defined by my circumstances, my past, or the limitations others placed on me. As a Deaf person, I often heard (and unfortunately believed) the message that I was somehow less capable. I carried those messages around like unwanted baggage. But God had other plans—He came with better luggage, carrying truth, love, and a good dose of “stop believing that nonsense.”
He gently reminded me through His Word:
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” – Psalm 139:14
Honestly, it took me a while to truly know that full well. But God didn’t give up on me (thankfully—He is so much more patient than I am). He invited me to see myself through His eyes—a perfect creation, designed and loved beyond measure. Spoiler alert: Learning to love myself didn’t happen overnight. I didn’t wake up one morning and suddenly think, “Wow, I’m amazing!” Nope, it was a slow, steady process of rewiring how I talked to myself.
The Mirror Pep Talks
Picture this: every morning, there I was, standing in front of the mirror, hairbrush in hand, probably wondering why my hair had a mind of its own. But instead of criticizing myself for not looking like a magazine cover, I started replacing those negative thoughts with truths.
“You are capable. You are worthy. You are wonderfully made by the Creator of heaven and earth.”
I’ll admit, at first, I felt a little awkward talking to myself in the mirror. I half expected someone to walk in and say, “Are you okay? Do you need chai latte?” But over time, those words sank in. They transformed how I saw myself. I also began to notice the little things I loved about me—like how my smile could light up a room or the way I showed kindness to others. The small victories added up, and soon, the critical voice in my head got quieter.
Embracing Self-Love through God’s Perspective
In the chaos of daily life, it’s easy to lose touch with that gentle voice inside us—the one that says, “Hey, you’re doing great, even if you didn’t fold the laundry today!” But today, I want to remind you: You are a reflection of God’s divine love. You are cherished and immensely worthy. 💕
“Love your neighbor as yourself” – Mark 12:31
Notice something? It’s not just a call to love others. It’s also a divine nudge to love ourselves. I mean, how can we truly pour out love to others if we don’t fill our own cup first? (And no, coffee doesn’t count as a full cup of self-love—though it certainly helps.)
Let this truth sink in
You are worthy. You are loved. You were not born by accident or as some cosmic afterthought. You carry the light of Christ within you—a light that’s meant to shine brightly, not dimmed by doubts and insecurities. Embracing self-love mirrors the way Jesus loves us, spreading His light to every part of our lives.
